Update -
ok, ok, so TRAPPED gets picked as an "Official Selection" at the NYIIFVF and everyone has something to say... Some good, some not so good... Well let me say a few things here about this whole "Film Festival "Business"..." (it is what it is)

The whole business side of it (including the festival circuit) is overall quite seedy. (but, again it is what it is)
I can almost guarantee you that if YOU have done a somewhat decent job of promoting YOUR movie and getting YOUR movie some press, the festivals are more likely to try to select you because you're more likely to help get the festivals press. Its an incestuous relationship. (I screw you, and then you can screw me.)
"Screw" is the operative word here for "help."

Same goes for movie news publications. If the publication get a vibe that an article on your movie will help generate clicks or sell issues, you'll get your articles. To a degree its a chicken and egg issue. If you're not generating any press, no one has any reason to give you press. For the indie film maker, you have to hope that some kind of outlet will give you press that you can parlay into getting more press. Hence the NYIIFVF.

OK, Back to film festivals: In my experience there are only a few kinds of film festivals.
1) Local. Which focus is on screening stuff produced within their geography (EXCEPT for PITTSBURGH). Many are open to submissions outside of their geography but a strong preference is put on locals (EXCEPT for PITTSBURGH). The general quality of the films screened in these fests is typically "OK" as a product of just having a smaller pool to pull from. Sure there are gems in there but for every gem you have to sit through something absolutely "bad." Frequently I get the feeling these fests are open to non-locals just to increase the amount of their submission fees they can collect so they can charge as much as NYIIFVF. The judges on these are usually pretty biased/bad. (remember - once again, I screw you, and then, you can screw me)(we all work together)

2) NYIIFVF - and or the National/Internationally festivals. These will still have some degree of local bias but usually only a minority are selected from the locals. In general the quality of the movies/shorts shown are much better. Most even screen true independent films in them with named actors. They typically have a panel of judges that *most* of the time take their job seriously in choosing a winner based on the criteria of the fest. Now what has been hinted at about the NYIIFVF remains to be seen for me, but so far my experience with them has been very courteous and I have found them to be very professional. In the end, who cares "who wins" its all art! No one really ever wins when it come to art...You either do it or you don't. It's all subjective.

3) The Big Budget Studio lined festivals. These aggravate me to no end. Festivals like Sundance and Cannes started out to show and bring to an audience films created outside of the big budget studios... Movies that wouldn't have ever gotten a wider release if not having been shown at one of these fests. To give the Independent filmmaker a chance at "making it."

Now they're wall to wall studio pictures of self adulation. These movies/actors/producers have "already made it" and "don't need no stinking festival" to get their movie to be looked at. These inglourious basterds are interloping/taking over/co-opting/screwing the "indie" film scene. (once again, I screw you, and then, you can screw me)

I've also discovered that most of the fests that fall under #1 and #2 are typically started and run by an Independent film maker/company of some sort. In general these indie fests are just trying to create another venue to help out their fellow movie makers and hopefully turn a narrow profit or to get exposure to help finance/promote their next indie film. (except for Pittsburgh)

Once and for all, lets forget about scams. Being in this entertainment business for quite some time now you need to realize, everything is a scam...everyone lies, no one cares, and everyone wants to be paid!
Do what it is you do, and "fuhgeddaboutit"

What a wonderful evening last night. I met with TJ Lubinsky. We have been emailing back and forth for quite some time now, and our schedules finally afforded us an opportunity to get together and chew the fat on all things Doo Wop, including special topics like The Skyliners and the process of making Since I Don't Have You - the movie.

TJ also opened up the phone lines from all over the country and we answered questions pertaining to The Skyliners, Janet Vogel Rapp, and the Since I Don't Have You movie.

The Cleveland International Film Festival

We shot the MexaFlora scenes the other evening and it was fantastic!

This backstory is that Liam's father was going to be bought out by MexaFlora, and while they worked on the buyout MexaFlora cooked up specific accounting tricks that ended up leaving him with nothing. MexaFlora made sure that Liam's father would be left completely and utterly bankrupt. Due to this "failure" Liam's father ended up killing himself.

Years later, Liam found out who and where these MexaFlora "Bosses" were, especially the one that ruined his father. They were laughing and joking about the deals that they had done and the people who were killed or "removed" in the process as they expanded their MexaFlora empire. One evening, Liam broke into the house of the bastard that was in charge of underhanded buyout and killed his wife, and then killed the Boss. Liam really liked it and had the taste for blood and flowers ever since.

Winter Morning Pictures is begin a first time series of student lectures on the art and business of movie making.

The year long series is called "Script to Screen" and will kick off at Central Catholic High School in May 2008. The Script to Screen program was initiated by me, as a way encourage and educate students of my high school alma mater to pursue their passions for script writing and film making.

As you can see we will have a ton to cover. And as we go through each of these stages we will be updating the students as to how we are progressing on the case study SINCE.

The "final" if you will, will be the students actually participating in the production of SINCE when we shoot at some of our scenes at Central Catholic next summer 09.

This is an awesome program, an awesome opportunity for the students and if things go well over this year, we will present our results for implementation throughout the Greater Diocese. That would be huge!

TRAPPED Distribution -

We are in discussions with a few sales agents currently for the distribution of TRAPPED. We will have is distributed internationally and domestically on DVD.

May have a few on BluRay, but we will cover that with our distributors and resellers.

We will make the announcement when we know the dates of DVD release for Netflix, Amazon, Blockbuster, and BestBuy.

TRAPPED - premier(s)

We are going to have quite a few -

One private for family, investors, crew, cast.

One by invite only - We are looking at a summer 08 Premier of TRAPPED at SouthSide Works. As soon as we finalize the details we will let you all know the dates.

Many open to the general public at various theaters including but not limited to - SouthSide Works, The Oaks, Waterworks, WaterFront, The Mills, etc...

We will also have it screened at Three Rivers Film Festival in the Fall of 08 as well.

Our editing is going well. So far we have about 53 minutes edited and it is looking great!

We are putting everything together using FinalCutStudio and it has been a dream of a product to work with.

We are in good company too, because The Coen's used the same workflow on NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN that we did as well as Francis Ford Coppola for YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH.

Digital Assets - This is just like we did for TRAPPED as explained by Academy Award winner Walter Murch

Shooting digitally with the Sony 900S means you have 58 minutes of tape rather than 10 minutes of film, which is the limit when you’re shooting 35mm,” says Walter Murch. “So there were a number of scenes where Francis would ask for a restart within the take. He would let the scene run up to a certain point and then say, kind of like a conductor, ‘Let’s take it again from the fourth line.’ So the actors would quickly reposition themselves and redo the scene from that point. The result is that there is no loss of emotional momentum since the actors are still ‘in’ the scene. If you’ve ever looked at film dailies, when a director says ‘cut’ there’s almost a visible exhalation from everyone. Then the makeup people come in, and the actors wander about, and lighting gets adjusted. So getting back into the mood of the scene for the next take can sometimes be difficult. If you are shooting digitally, it’s definitely easier to get a performance to a certain point and then do a restart because you aren’t worrying about running out of film.”

Here are the shots I took from the scene last Friday evening of the killing. . .Mike and Kevin did a fantastic job and were real troopers. They worked most of the night to get these "shots" perfect, and let me tell you, the scene absolutely kicks ass!!!
Oh, and not to forget, I will work up a special limited edition TRAPPED poster as well with Mike and Kevin on it. Great stuff. I will load up the video clip soon!

We had a fantastic time this past weekend. We were fortunate enough to shoot in an Aspinwall favorite ~ Patricia Boutique ~ Needless to say the clothes and store are out of this world!

Patricia is not only our wardrobe supervisor for TRAPPED, but she also appears in the movie as the chic store owner. Thanks again Patricia and Bart for all of your help, understanding and participation!

What a wonderful weekend it was. We are so very lucky the weather is cooperating for ALL and I mean ALL of our exterior shots. Everyday we have shot outside over the past 2 months it has been beautiful!~ (you know, that just doesn't happen in Pgh)(someone "upstairs" must really like me)
These Pix are from The Square Cafe. A local spot in Regent Square. It is a fantastic place. The decor is absolutely fantastic, the food is great and the people are wonderful. Thank you all so very much for hospitality!

Here is a small behind the scenes clip of Tom Atkins (Detective Abbott) and Paul Bingham (Mel The Security Guard at Hutton Inc.)

The Scene-

Detective Abbott gets the call from the Security Guard Mel. They arrive at the office and stand in front of the desk of Edward Roth Hutton, played by me. They discuss what the probable cause may be and and how "Sad" it is. WELL, i just can't keep it together when Mel The Security Guard says "This is so sad." I lose it and start laughing. The problem is that I am supposed to be dead, and that in being as quiet as I can, i end up shaking because of laughing so damn hard. Needless to say this took quite a few takes to get this one right because I thought it was so damned funny. Watch Tom Atkins watching me. He sees me shaking (again) and can't control his laughter either. Good times, good times.

Well what can I say. It was fabulous weekend. The weather, the people, the food, everything was great. Our set locations this past weekend were in Aspinwall and Fox Chapel.

I have to say that out friends at the Aspinwall Police Station were fantastic! All of us at Winter Morning Pictures say a big "Thank You" to - John Sabol, Dave Nemec and Tom Duffy. The help, attention and understanding that you gave to our project was above and beyond the call of duty. You guys are great team members and really fun to be around. Our crew and cast thought is was so cool to be able to shoot in a real police station with real police. You guys are the tops!

For this scene I chose a specific street location in Pittsburgh that, to me, has a European feel to it; a narrow street, great foliage, tiny shoppes, and turn of the century gas lamps. We even wet the street to give it a cool noir look. I think we got the exactly what we needed on a beautiful crisp fall evening.
